Fred Ridley takes command at Augusta National amid relentless pursuit of perfection
(Tue, 17 Oct 2017 21:30:31 GMT)
The first time Fred Ridley drove down Magnolia Lane was in 1976. He was a 23-year-old amateur who had been invited to play in the Masters Tournament as the defending U.S. Amateur champion. Never before had he set foot on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National; he had only seen the Masters on television. On Monday, more than 41 years after that initial trip, Ridley made the drive for the first time as chairman of Augusta National and the Masters Tournament. “When I drove down Magnolia Lane yesterday as my first day as chairman of the club, I promise you that I did so with the same excitement and anticipation that I had over 41 years ago,” Ridley said Tuesday during a teleconference. “I’m very

Oct. 17, 2017 CARMEL, Indiana - The Michigan State men’s golf team wrapped up the Crooked Stick Invitational in Carmel, Indiana, with the final round on Tuesday. The Spartans ended the tournament at 14-over-par 878 (295-282-301) to take sixth place. No. 9 Kentucky finished atop the 12-team field with an even-par 864 (289-285-290) at the Crooked Stick Golf Club. Crooked Stick Results  | Golfstat Sophomore Kaleb Johnson notched his second top-two finish of the fall as he tied for second place with a 1-under-par 215 (75-66-74). “Obviously we’re good enough to compete against some of the nation’s best teams, but we’re making some mistakes that are keeping us from placing higher,” said MSU head coach

NBC's Jimmy Roberts Feared Committing A Felony While With President Bush
(Tue, 17 Oct 2017 02:16:00 GMT)
Did sportscaster Jimmy Roberts, who has achieved success and fame at ESPN and now at NBC Sports and Golf Channel, run afoul of the law early in his superstar career…right in front of former President George H.W. Bush? Roberts, who will cover the PGA Tour “President’s Cup” Matches in September at Liberty National Golf Club in the New York area revealed the answer. “I was with ESPN in 1997 and the U.S. Open was being conducted at Congressional Country Club just outside Washington D.C. It occurred to me that many Presidents of the United States had played there so I wanted to produce a feature on Presidential golf, Roberts explained. “With that in mind, I wrote a letter to former President Bush

Column: Massachusetts firefighter is headed to the Masters
(Tue, 17 Oct 2017 16:19:56 GMT)
The U.S. Mid-Amateur typically signals the end of the golf season for Matt Parziale. Not long after the tournament is over — usually early for Parziale, considering he had never won a match in three previous tries — he puts the clubs away and falls into a routine schedule as a firefighter on Ladder 1 for the Brockton Fire Department in Massachusetts. His weekends are more likely to be spent on the ski slopes of New Hampshire than the fairways of Thorny Lea Golf Club. "If this didn't happen, I wouldn't play again," Parziale said. "I'd play on the nice days until the snow melts in March or April. Now, I've got some things to figure out next year. It will be a different winter, but I'm excited."

(Mon, 16 Oct 2017 11:50:50 GMT)
Tyrrell Hatton hardly got carried away after winning his second successive tournament on Sunday. Put another way, Hatton is 45 under par for his past eight rounds.

Golf-France hopes Ryder Cup will help break sport's elitist image
(Mon, 16 Oct 2017 12:57:09 GMT)
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France, Oct 16 (Reuters) - France is hoping to break golf's elitist image in the country when it host the Ryder Cup next year, the president of the organising committee said on Monday. The biennal competition between Europe and the United States will take place in France for the first time from Sept 28-30, 2018. "It's a great honour, but also a lot of responsibility and the main reason we wanted to host this Ryder Cup is to break the elitist image golf sometimes still has in our country, and allow it to develop as it has in many of the world's countries," Pascal Grizot, the president of the organising committee, told Reuters.

Willett did not want to play golf after 2016 U.S. Masters title
(Mon, 16 Oct 2017 08:00:03 GMT)
The 30-year-old Englishman, who split with coach Pete Cowen, became the first defending champion since Canadian Mike Weir in 2004 to miss the cut at Augusta this year. "At the end of 2016 I was in contention in the Race to Dubai and I just didn't want to play golf. It's utterly ridiculous," he wrote in a blog on the European Tour website (www.europeantour.com).

Stacy Lewis returns to LPGA Tour after hiatus, major Harvey donation
(Mon, 16 Oct 2017 12:00:46 GMT)
Stacy Lewis returns to action this week on the LPGA in Taiwan after a five-week hiatus. The former World No. 1 said this break in particular felt more relaxing than any she’s had in a long time. That’s due in large part to the fact that Lewis ended a three-year victory drought at the Cambia Portland Classic in early September. “Felt like I could shut the mind off more than anything,” said Lewis, who made the victory all the more special by donating 100 percent of her winnings to victims of Hurricane Harvey in her hometown of Houston.  Lewis, 32, didn’t touch a club for two and a half weeks. She went to two college golf tournaments to cheer on Arkansas, her alma mater, and Houston, where husband

Canon Claycomb 63, Eugene Hong 65, Sophie Guo 65
(Tue, 17 Oct 2017 02:49:00 GMT)
Sophomore sensation Canon Claycomb shot an 8-under-par 63 and senior 2016 state champ Eugene Hong fired a 65 as Circle Christian opened its bid for a state team title with a runaway victory at Monday’s Class 1A, District 11 boys golf tournament. Claycomb’s bogey-free round broke a school record of 65 he tied earlier this season. “I knew I could get the school record. That was a goal of mine since the beginning of the year.” Claycomb said. “It’s been a year for me where I’ve been meeting a lot of my goals and expectations.” Daniel Core’s 70 and a 72 by Evan Sun rounded out a 14-under 270 total for the Centurions that was 55 shots ahead of runner-up Lake Highland Prep at The Country Club at Deer

Keegan Bradley takes major leap toward Augusta with strong CIMB finish
(Tue, 17 Oct 2017 14:00:08 GMT)
Keegan Bradley knows what it feels like to watch major championships and team events from home. Bradley, who won the 2011 PGA Championship in his major championship debut, snapped a five-year streak of playing in all four majors last season as he missed out on both the Masters and the British Open. Oh, and after making two Ryder Cup teams and a Presidents Cup squad from 2012-14, Bradley has been left off U.S. teams in each of the past three years. “It stinks,” Bradley said back at the BMW Championship, where Bradley contended before fading to a T-27. His season ended there at Conway Farms and Bradley also was denied a trip to East Lake, which would’ve assured him a spot in all four majors in
